Phoebe and her magical unicorn friend, Marigold Heavenly Nostrils, are off to music camp. Phoebe manages to avoid being hit with her bunkmate's clarinet and Marigold befriends the lake monster. There is fun to be had and sparkles aplenty. There are also goblins, who are after Phoebe's frenemy, Dakota's, magical sentient hair.
This is the third book Phoebe and Her Unicorn adventure, and contains an introduction co-written by Cory Doctorow and his seven-year-old daughter Poesy. As Doctorow senior observes, Phoebe and Marigold are a little like an adorable female version of Calvin and Hobbes. The art is simple line drawings and the characters are adorable. I love the humour of Phoebe the “weird” kid with a vivid imagination.
Unicorn vs. Goblins is wonderful, whimsical fun. There is plenty to appeal to both adults and children and I now must get hold of the first two volumes (Phoebe and her Unicorn and Unicorn on a Roll) to share with my kids who I am certain will go nuts for them.
