Review: Redefining Girly by Melissa Atkins-Wardy

We live in a world where clothing, toys and entertainment for children is gendered. Both boys and girls are limited in the colours they are allowed to choose and the types of toys they are allowed to play with, which shapes what they grow up to think it means to be a man or a woman.
Even worse, girls are sexualised by clothing and toys which send out age innapropriate messages to both the girls themselves and the people around them. The fact that products like g-strings and toy stripper poles are being marketed to little girls makes me throw up in mouth a little. For parents like me who worry about the effects of such marketing on our children, Redefining Girly is a helpful, down to earth guide to assisting our daughters in creating a positive self image and arming them with critical thinking skills.
The back of the book contains a bibiliography and a list of books and websites for further reading which I think I could lose myself in for days. There are suggestions of where to find gender neutral clothing for both sexes with empowering slogans like "colours are for everyone" and "full of awesome" as well as great lists of books and movies with active female heroes that both boys and girls can look up to.
